Wis. Gov. Walker Issues 'True Wake-Up Call' for GOP in Midterms

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Monday issued what he called a "true wake-up call" to Republicans that there will be a "blue wave" in this year's midterm elections unless action is taken.

"There is a difference between a wake-up call and a panic call," the Republican governor, a 2016 presidential candidate, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

"Panic is you've got no record, no agenda to run on. In this case, we do."

Walker said he's basing his warning on what happened last Tuesday in his state's midterm primary election, when liberal Milwaukee judge Rebecca Dallet easily defeated conservative Michael Screnock in a race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, in a race seen as having implications for the state's primary election later this year.

The race to fill a 10-year seat was officially nonpartisan, but millions of dollars was spent and public endorsements rolled in from people like former Vice President Joe Biden, ex-Attorney General Eric Holder, and from the National Rifle Association.

"[If we] don't wake up to what we saw last Tuesday in Wisconsin and across the nation, there could be a blue wave out there," Walker said Monday. "If you listen to our state, particularly Democrats running for the governor in the state, their rhetoric is not increasingly liberal but filled with anger and rhetoric towards me and Republicans in general."

Much of the Democrats' message is if they win the House, they'll push for impeachment, said Walker, but he thinks people trying to get out the party's message should focus on the tax cut laws passed in December and the improving economy.

If Democrats win, "they're so aggressive, they would repeal those things," said Walker.

Walker also on Monday discussed President Donald Trump's call for National Guard troops for the Mexican border, saying he supports the move.

"You hear the left, it has never happened before," said Walker. "Years ago, President [Barack] Obama did it. George W. Bush did it, President George Herbert Walker Bush did it. Over a century ago in 1916, the Wisconsin National Guard was on the border six months before they were called up to be part of the 32nd with the state of Michigan, the great Red Arrow brigade. That is part of our history. We protect our shores and our border."

Walker said he'd also take the discussion a step further by suggesting Trump put in permanent training facilities along the southern border for the National Guard.

"What a great way to save money," he said. "Train people in the military, at the same time you help guard the border."
