Rep. Taylor: Trump Threw North Korea's Ruling Regime Off Balance

By    |   Friday, 01 June 2018 01:13 PM

President Donald Trump has thrown North Korea's ruling regime off balance, but there will most likely be a summit and positive outcomes as a result, Rep. Scott Taylor said Friday.

However, the Virginia Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom," North Korea has been "super cagey" in its dealings with the United States, and he is feeling skeptical about whether the Asian nation is ready to denuclearize.

"I think that's important, and that's where my skepticism comes in," said Taylor. "The president has certainly, with military pressure, with sanctions, with the ability and the power to walk away from the table, has really changed the dynamic and altered the calculus for North Korea."

However, what North Korea gets in exchange for agreeing to denuclearize will be key, said Taylor.

"I think the president can have a Marshall plan or a Trump plan where you use Asian economies to put forth a fund to help bring the country into the community of nation states, but not with American money but with the countries that stand the most to lose if there is war," said Taylor, mentioning Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China. "I think you need something like that to really fundamentally alter the calculus of the North Korean regime so they will actually denuclearize."

However, history shows that previous North Korean regimes have claimed they would suspend or stop their nuclear programs, and "we have to have rigorous oversight from inspectors to make sure it actually happens."

Taylor said he thinks Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and the administration have done a "great job" to get the situation to where it is today. " But to actually fundamentally get rid of the nukes on the Korean peninsula you will have to have more carrot. I think the Asian countries that stand to lose the most could probably step up and help out."

Russia is trying to come to the table, said Taylor, and he expects China will as well.

"You'll see the other countries with interests in the region will want to play a part, too," he said. "There is a real opportunity for peace here, and this administration should absolutely be applauded for their effort."
