In a move that puts him at odds with the local and federal Democrats, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer has endorsed healthcare executive Tahir Javed to win the Texas seat held by U.S. Rep. Gene Green, a Houston Democrat.

"His record as a job creator, healthcare executive, and teacher give him the perfect mix of skills and experience to serve the district and Texas," Schumer said.

"He’s been very helpful in electing Democrats across the country, and I am now proud to support him as part of a new generation of leaders we need in Washington."

But others in the Democratic establishment have largely endorsed state Sen. Sylvia Garcia's bid for the seat, The Texas Tribune reports.

Garcia's supporters include members of the Texas delegation, the powerhouse fundraising organization EMILY's List and Green himself, the newspaper says.

Javed is the CEO of Riceland Healthcare Systems, which provides services to East Texas families.
