Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday that lawmakers must honor the final wish of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by not considering her replacement until the next president takes office in January.

During a brief media appearance with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., in New York City Sunday evening, Schumer stressed that the reproductive rights and healthcare for millions of Americans are at stake with the next Supreme Court justice.

"Call your senator and tell them not to listen to Mitch McConnell, not to be afraid of Mitch McConnell. To stand up and do the right thing," Schumer said, referencing the Senate majority leader. Shortly after Ginsburg's death was announced Friday evening, McConnell said the Senate would take up a nominee to the court before the election if President Donald Trump names someone.

According to an MSNBC producer, Ocasio-Cortez said, "And to Mitch McConnell, we need to tell him he is playing with fire.

"Our rights are at risk with this appointment."

Schumer wrote on Twitter, meanwhile, that Democrats are "united" in pushing back on any GOP efforts to replace Ginsburg before Inauguration Day and also to protect Americans' rights.

"I'm standing with @RepAOC at Madison High School — Ruth Bader Ginsburg's alma mater, my alma mater," he tweeted.

"We're here to remember RBG — champion for justice, trailblazer for women. Dems are united in fighting to honor her last wish and all that's at stake for health care & Americans' rights."
