Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, on Monday told The Hill that House Republican leaders will likely introduce a legislation package this week that includes school safety and gun-related measures, a move that comes nearly two weeks after a gunman opened fire at a high school in Florida, killing 17 and injuring at least 17.

“You may see something introduced this week, but obviously you won’t see it passed this week,” he said. “But pretty quickly. You’ll see it soon.”

The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has prompted a renewed push for gun regulation, with Democrats vowing to make it a campaign issue this year. Florida Gov. Rick Scott last week backed raising the age for rifle purchases to 21 – the shooter was 19 and purchased the AR-15 he used legally – and President Donald Trump has pushed for legislation on gun control and school safety.

“I think we’re going to have a great bill put forward very soon having to do with background checks, having to do with getting rid of certain things and keeping other things, and perhaps we’ll do something on age, because it doesn’t seem to make sense that you have to wait until you are 21 years old to get a pistol, but to get a gun like this maniac used in the school, you get that at 18,” Trump told Fox News Channel on Monday. “That doesn’t make sense.”

Stivers told the Hill the package would also include measures to improve the existing background check system.
