Rep. Schiff Would've Liked to Know Who Funded Dossier Sooner

(ABC News' "This Week")

Before deflecting away from revelations the Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee helped fund the foreign opposition research of Fusion GPS directed at President Donald Trump, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., admitted he "would have liked to know" about the funding source sooner.

"I certainly would have liked to know who paid for it earlier, but nonetheless, that's just one factor to be considered," Rep. Schiff told ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos.

Rep. Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, then turned to desires to verify the findings of the opposition research, which President Trump rebuked as a "witch hunt for evil politics" in a Sunday tweetstorm.

"How much of the work is accurate?" Rep. Schiff, a frequent critic of President Trump, asked Stephanopoulos. "How much of it is true? And my colleagues don't seem particularly interested in that question, but that is really the most important question for the American people."

Rep. Schiff, undeterred on the potential political motivations of the foreign research aimed at sowing discord in American democracy, admitted after months of investigating there is no concrete evidence of the Democrats' alleged Trump campaign collusion with Russians beyond what is "highly suggestive of that," he said.

"The question we continue to investigate is, was the campaign coordinating in the Russian help?" Rep. Schiff asked. "That remains to be seen."

What Rep. Schiff refused to say is whether or not FBI special counsel Robert Mueller is targeting President Trump in his investigation of Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

"I can't comment on that, George," Rep. Schiff told Stephanopoulos. "I can't answer that one way or the other. . . . I can't comment on that at all."
