PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel's declaration that he's proud of being both gay and a Republican, and Donald Trump's promise to protect the LGBT community marked a "significant landmark" for the United States and the Republican Party, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough said Friday.

"You don't want to overstate anything, but I think culturally, I think that was a significant landmark for this country, culturally, and the party that has been seen as the most reactionary," the "Morning Joe" host said.

In his speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, Thiel, a friend of Trump's, said the argument over "who gets to use which bathroom" is nothing but a distraction.

"Who cares?" Thiel said, drawing overwhelming applause from the delegates. "Of course, every American has a unique identity. I am proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican. But most of all, I am proud to be an American."

Bloomberg Politics Managing Editor Mark Halperin called Thursday night one of the most important "in the history of the Republican Party and gay rights."

"[It was] not just what Peter Thiel said, but Donald Trump twice made reference to the LGBT community," said Halperin. "He thanked the audience for cheering when he talked about it. This is a party that has seen a huge change behind the country at large."

There has also been a change with GOP officeholders and strategists, Halperin continued, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who has called for a more-open view on gay rights.

"I was impressed," Steele agreed. "And when Donald Trump came back and sort of doubled down on the point, not once but twice, and that moment for me was very important, was when he looked at the cameras and said thank you for applauding that."

NBC political corrrespondent Mike Barnicle, though, said he found a bit of irony in the appearance on a day when the NBA removed its all-star game from Charlotte, North Carolina, over the state's bathroom laws.

Scarborough said that the issue speaks to Trump's world views, and social conservatives should be warned that if he's elected, to "duck because he's not on your side on these issues . . . He does not care.

"He has a more open view that certainly is more in line at least with millennial voters, and with an awful lot of voters."
