White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci denied Sunday that President Donald Trump is thinking about pardons for himself and family members in the Russia probe being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.
In his first appearance on a Sunday political news show, Scaramucci sparred with host Jake Tapper about a tweet in which the president referenced a Washington Post report about his power to pardon.
"Anthony, who is the president thinking about pardoning?" Tapper asked, to which Scaramucci shot back: "Jake, let's cut through it all. You and I right here, let's cut through it all."
"You're basically saying that tweet is suggesting that the president is going to pardon himself and every one of his family members," he continued. "What you are suggesting? He's not going to do that."
Pressed by Tapper on who Trump is thinking about pardoning, Scaramucci asserted "Nobody… nobody" – and blamed leaks as "unfair."
"It has been coming up a lot," he added. "There's an undercurrent of nonsensical stuff. ... This is the problem with the whole system. He's the president of the United States. If I turn to one of my staff members and ask them a question, they run out to the news media and tell everything I'm thinking about, is that fair to the president?"
