Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci is giving more details as to why he turned on President Donald Trump, telling Newsmax TV his ex-boss's Twitter attack was the final straw.
"I was on Bill Maher, literally two weeks ago tonight, trying to defend President Trump. They brought up the racist tweets, I said, 'I'm sorry, that's not defensible,'" Scaramucci said during an appearance on "Newsmax Now," referencing Trump's verbal attacks on four Democratic congresswomen.
"We got to the post-production party and Bill turned to me and said, 'do you think he's gonna watch?' I had no idea. Then my wife said, 'You were defending him nine out of 10 times.' I then said to her, 'well, on that one tenth of a time, if he goes after me on his Twitter feed, it's evidence that he is a full-blown demagogue.' And demagogues have a very poor history of being political leaders. 'And if he does that, I'm gonna say I'm done. No mas.'"
Trump did attack Scaramucci on Twitter, and this week he brought Scaramucci's wife into the mix.
"Anthony Scaramucci is a highly unstable 'nut job' who was with other candidates in the primary who got shellacked, & then unfortunately wheedled his way into my campaign," Trump wrote in a two-part tweet. "I barely knew him until his 11 days of gross incompetence-made a fool of himself, bad on TV. Abused staff, got fired. Wrote a very nice book about me just recently. Now the book is a lie? Said his wife was driving him crazy, 'something big' was happening with her. Getting divorced. He was a mental wreck. We didn't want him around. Now Fake News puts him on like he was my buddy!"
Scaramucci told Newsmax TV's John Bachman that Trump's behavior, particularly when he brought up his spouse, is telling.
"This is a bully. Cowards go after civilians like that. So this is a full-blown bully," Scaramucci said. "Suburban housewives don't like that, suburban men don't like that either. It's very uncool."
Scaramucci is now setting up a super PAC that will call out Trump's "bullying."
"We'll amass a fortune, and we'll dedicate that in advertising to make sure that we turn those voters off of the president," he said.
"Hopefully … we'll get a very credible, very talented, charismatic communicator who has similar policies to the president but just is flat-out less crazy."
