One-time White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci came to the defense of President Donald Trump, who had referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as "Pocahontas" during an event honoring Native American code talkers.

Scaramucci's comments came during a Tuesday interview on CNN's "New Day."

"She's been nasty to him, and he's been concurrently nasty to her," Scaramucci said.

"At the end of the day — we're getting a little bit too micro-managing with each other's languages and the whole political correctness movement.

"I think most people, in general, are tired of it ... I'm totally tired of it."

CBS News reported that at a White House event for the code talkers, Trump said: "You're very, very special people. You were here long before any of us were here. Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas. But you know what. I like you. Because you are special."

The network news noted Trump has called Warren by the name in the past. It said questions about her heritage were raised during her Senate campaign when she was unable to prove her claim that she had Native American heritage.

Now, she is using Trump's words as part of her fundraising efforts, CBS News said.

"You might have heard that Donald Trump likes to call me 'Pocahontas,'" Warren wrote in a fundraising email, according to the network news. "He does it on Twitter, at rallies, and even in official White House meetings."

She called it the "very worst of gutter politics."
