Former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia Robert Jordan told CNN on Monday that President Donald Trump shouldn’t take what King Salman of Saudi Arabia says at face value.
Trump noted on Monday that King Salman “firmly denies” any involvement with the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and said, “It sounds to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers.”
“Let’s remember, this is the same King Salman who told me after 9/11 that the 9/11 attacks were an Israeli plot,” Jordan said in an interview on CNN. “He said that firmly. Did I believe that? Of course not. I don’t think you can go in with wide-eyed acceptance of anything some of these world leaders say.”
The former ambassador admitted that it’s possible the king was uninvolved in Khashoggi’s disappearance, but said Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman must have known about it, and that investigators have been hampered by the Saudi government delaying their access to the embassy where Khashoggi was last seen.
"But nonetheless, I think we’ve got to have a thorough investigation," he said.
