White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders took former President Barack Obama to task on Sunday for tying the current "booming Trump economy" to policies of his administration.

"Can't make it up: Obama now wants credit for the booming Trump economy. At least we can all agree the economy is better under President Trump," Sanders tweeted Sunday. "I'm old enough to remember when President Trump's election was going to 'crash the market.' One year later: market up over 30%, two million new jobs & 1,000 new manufacturing jobs created every day just last month...and now Obama wants credit for the booming Trump economy."

Obama on Tuesday jokingly thanked himself for economic gains the U.S. is currently experiencing during an address on climate change at a global conference of mayors in Chicago, the Washington Examiner reported.

Obama credited his clean energy policy and carbon pollution regulations for current U.S. economic performance, stating, "as we took these actions, we saw the U.S. economy grow consistently."

"We saw the longest streak of job creation in American history by far, a streak that still continues, by the way," Obama said. "Thanks, Obama."

Recent economic gains point to a 17-year low in unemployment and a surging stock market that has reached historic highs, consistently rising after President Donald Trump took office earlier this year, The Street reported Saturday.
