House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., says the election in November will demonstrate the public’s support for Republicans’ approach to the budget.
“We will not only win the next election — we have a unique opportunity to sweep and remake the political landscape,” he said in a speech Tuesday,
Politico reports.
“Of course, we will highlight the president’s failed agenda. That goes without saying. But you know what? Americans deserve to choose an alternative, one that aligns with our needs. One we can rally behind.”
The GOP would “welcome” a debate with President Barack Obama on Medicare and taxes, given Republicans’ superior and more popular positions on those issues, Ryan said. Answering questions after the speech, he said House Republicans will offer a tax bill in about a month that would extend the [George W.] Bush era tax cuts for another year.
When it comes to the budget, Obama just doesn’t get it, Ryan said. “In the face of enormous challenges, the president and his party leaders have steadily increased government’s power. They’ve promised wonderful things, and consistently delivered awful results. And they show no signs of changing course.”
In particular, Obama has created damage through his advocacy of class warfare, Ryan said. “The divisive politics of the last three years have not only undermined social solidarity, they have brought progress and reform to a standstill.”
Ryan expressed optimism for the chances of Wisconsin GOP Gov. Scott Walker in his recall election June 5. “This is a national trendsetting election in Wisconsin, . . . and courage is on the ballot,” Ryan said. “What people don’t see is these [Walker’s] reforms are really working well. They’re reforming our schools. No more ‘last in, first out.’”
