Ryan's Campaign War Chest Rapidly Expanding

By    |   Monday, 05 August 2013 03:02 PM EDT

The political war chest of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan has grown enormously this year.

Ryan, the vice presidential running mate of Mitt Romney in the 2012 general election, has raised a whopping $1.7 million in the first six months of 2013, according to new records.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
reports that if donations to Ryan continue as steadily as they have, he may be able to sock away nearly $7 million during the current two-year election cycle.

That beats his last fundraising effort for his 2012 race when he brought in less than $5 million.

Ryan, now in his eighth term, draws about 75 percent of his financial support from individuals rather than special-interest political action committees.

"He's kind of in another category now — those members who may be looking at significantly higher office in the future," Bob Biersack, a senior fellow at the Center for Responsive Politics, told the Journal Sentinel’s Daniel Bice.

"These people often raise a lot more than they have in the past and they usually make an effort to reach beyond their traditional supporters."
