Giuliani Praises Mueller, Says Trump Interview May Not Happen

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, now serving on President Donald Trump's legal team, said Wednesday night he likes and respects special counsel Robert Mueller but he remains cautious about where the Russia investigation is going.

"He's a patriot, a good man, served his country – did a good job with the FBI," Giuliani told Fox News' Sean Hannity. "I don't think he would be affected by malice or prejudice. However, I don't have an explanation for the people that he hired — not all of them. I've dealt with them very briefly, I think they are very professional.

"I have an open mind about Bob, I don't about [former FBI director James] Comey. I know Comey much better, I have the indignity of having hired him for his first big job, and I'm embarrassed that I hired him."

Giuliani told Hannity he is working with Trump's other lawyers to negotiate a possible Trump interview with Mueller. He said he would not allow the interview to last longer than two and a half hours, which Giuliani noted was the length of time former President Bill Clinton was interviewed for the civil suit connected to his extramarital affairs.

Giuliani did, however, reserve the right to refuse a Trump interview altogether.

"Right now, the odds are he wouldn't be interviewed," he said.

Giuliani conveyed his concern Mueller's team seems to be leaning toward believing Comey and not Trump. When asked whether Trump could provide written answers to questions in lieu of an in-person interview, Giuliani said Mueller's team shot down the idea.

"They said no to that," he said.

Throughout the interview, Giuliani insisted there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, an allegation that jumpstarted a Department of Justice investigation in 2016. Last spring, after Comey leaked memos that detailed his interactions with Trump, Mueller was appointed as an outside special counsel to investigate collusion claims.

"There's been too much government misconduct," Giuliani said. "The crimes now have all been committed by the government and their agents. The lies by Comey. It's terrible."

Giuliani also made news when he addressed the Stormy Daniels saga. Daniels is a porn star who claimed to have had an affair with Trump 10 years ago. Days before the 2016 election, Trump's attorney Michael Cohen paid her $130,000 and had her sign a nondisclosure agreement to keep her quiet about her claims.

The details of the payment have come into question. Giuliani said Trump repaid Cohen, which contradicted earlier reporting on the matter. However, he clarified the statement by saying Trump repaid Cohen via the monthly retainer agreement he had with the Manhattan lawyer because Cohen was not performing any legal work for Trump at the time.

"That's how he was repaying it," Giuliani said.
