Donald Trump attorney and adviser Rudy Giuliani has not yet found a Georgia-based lawyer to negotiate his surrender and is being assisted by former New York Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, CNN reported Tuesday.
Though not a lawyer, Kerik has agreed to help Giuliani, at no cost, through bond negotiations with the Fulton County District Attorney's office and surrendering to local authorities, according to the report.
After the 2020 election, Kerik worked closely with Giuliani to track down potential election fraud. Kerik is now reportedly leveraging his law enforcement contacts to come to the aid of the former New York City mayor.
Like the other 18 defendants in the Georgia election interference case, including Trump, Giuliani is facing a Friday deadline to turn himself in after being indicted last week. He needs a Georgia-based lawyer to facilitate the bond agreement that would set the terms of his release after his surrender.
Last week, The New York Times reported that Giuliani has racked up huge legal bills battling an array of criminal investigations, private lawsuits, and legal disciplinary proceedings stemming from alleged efforts to keep Trump in office after the 2020 election. With his law license suspended and running out of money, Giuliani traveled to Mar-a-Lago in recent months to appeal to Trump for help with his legal bills.
Though not charged in the Georgia case, Kerik's attorney confirmed to CNN that he is the unnamed individual listed in the indictment as co-conspirator 5.
Co-conspirator 5 attended several meetings with lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Arizona, as well as at least one meeting at the White House, according to the indictment.
