Rubio Slams Media Reaction to Trump's Health as Hyperbolic

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., hit out at members of the media who raised concerns over President Donald Trump's recent medical examinations, dismissing their claims as "overreactions and exaggerations" in an interview on Fox News Thursday.

"Look at the stuff about the physical. You have people on the air diagnosing heart disease who have never even met the president, much less are in any position to diagnose him. It's just being covered as entertainment. There's a lot of hyperbole out there," Rubio said, referring to CNN's chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who said Wednesday that Trump has heart disease, judging by the medical information released by the White House doctor.

"This is math. This is based on the numbers that Dr. [Ronny] Jackson provided," Gupta said. "The president has heart disease."

Gupta, a neurosurgeon, followed his statement with an article on CNN explaining that "like most men of his age, President Donald Trump has a common form of heart disease," which is "relatively easy to address" through cholesterol-lowering medication and lifestyle changes.

Although conservatives like former Gov. Mike Huckabee and Jack Posobiec slammed Gupta for his claim, The New York Times found multiple doctors who also expressed concerns about Trump's health despite not having examined him.

Dr. David Maron of Stanford University director of preventive cardiology told the newspaper that he would "definitely" be concerned if Trump were his patient, based on the president's LDL, or "bad," cholesterol is very high for someone taking 10 milligrams of Crestor, a powerful cholesterol medication.

"We're talking about a 70-plus-year-old man who is obese and doesn't exercise. Just looking at the lab value, you would raise a big red flag," added Dr. Eric Topol, Scripps Research Institute cardiologist.

"I would never use the words 'excellent health.' How you could take these indices and say excellent health? That is completely contradicted."
