A last-ditch effort by Roy Moore to stop Democrat Doug Jones from being certified winner of a hotly-contested Alabama senatorial race is a "ridiculous" move by the scandal-scarred politician, Rep. Leonard Lance says.

The New Jersey Republican told CNN's "New Day" on Thursday that Moore — who filed an election complaint demanding state officials to delay the certification — should immediately concede.

"I think it is ridiculous and I am sure the authorities will certify the election. I'm a strong Republican, but I did not support Roy Moore. And he should concede the election," Lance said.

Late Wednesday, Moore launched a lawsuit claiming there was potential voter fraud at the polls which needs to be investigated. He believes "irregularities" may have tipped the results to Jones, the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Alabama since 1992.

"The purpose of the complaint is to preserve evidence of potential election fraud," Moore's campaign said in a statement.

"And to postpone the certification of Alabama's Special Election by Secretary of State John Merrill until a thorough investigation of potential election fraud, that improperly altered the outcome of this election, is conducted."

But the lawsuit will likely fall on deaf ears as Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill said Jones will be certified as the winner in the Dec. 12 election on Thursday.

Moore had been the clear favorite in the race until numerous women emerged to accuse him of sexual harassment and assault they alleged occurred when they were in their teens and he was in his 30s,

One of the women claims she was just 14 when she says Moore pawed her. Moore has denied all of the allegations. But he lost to Jones by about 20,000 votes.

Moore, a former Alabama Chief Justice, claims he took a polygraph test over the sexual misconduct allegations made against him by three alleged victims, the results of which "reflected that I did not know, nor had I ever had any sexual contact with any of these individuals."

Two weeks ago, President Donald Trump called on Moore to concede the election and revealed he had called Jones to congratulate him.
