Roy Moore Showing Signs of Making Another Senate Run

Republican Roy Moore, who lost a bitter campaign for a Senate seat to Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama in 2017, is signaling he might run again in 2020, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

Moore attended last Friday’s Alabama Republican Party dinner gala. And just days later, a new political action committee run his son, Caleb Moore, sent out a fundraising appeal, the Examiner said.

And when Moore’s friend and adviser, Dean Young, was asked about another possible bid for the Senate against Jones, he replied: “I’m not at liberty to say anything about that right now.”

The Examiner noted Moore found himself the subject of sexual assault allegations during the last election, which was held to fill the remainder of Republican Jeff Sessions’ term. And some Republicans fear he could divide the party and open the door for Jones’ re-election if he runs again.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is opposed to Moore getting into the race.

“The NRSC’s official stance is ABRM: anyone but Roy Moore,” said Kevin McLaughlin, the committee’s executive director. “The only thing Doug Jones and I agree on is that his only prayer for electoral success in 2020 is a rematch with Roy Moore."

In an article posted on AL.com last month, Moore blamed a disinformation campaign for his loss in 2017.

But Politico quoted Jones as saying: “If he really believes that and if the Republican Party really believes that then they all ought to just step aside, have a press conference with him and let's just do it again."
