There's a "battle royal" for political control of the U.S. Senate this November, but despite the roiling presidential race, Republicans have a good shot at maintaining their majority, according to GOP strategist Karl Rove.

In a commentary for The Wall Street Journal posted Wednesday night, Rove notes Republicans now control the upper chamber with 54 seats to Democrats’ 46.

"But the balance could tip either way in November," he warns.

Eleven seats are up for grabs, he writes, and "to maintain Senate control, Republicans must win seven of these races."

But there's reason for hope, he argues.

According to Rove, Republicans could be in good shape with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio polling ahead of his Democratic challenger, North Carolina GOP Sen. Richard Burr ahead in his race, the Nevada race to replace retiring Sen. Harry Reid tight, Arizona Sen. John McCain and Ohio's Sen. Rob Portman both with big leads.

"The remaining two contests are expensive all-out wars," he writes, with Pennsylvania GOP Sen. Pat Toomey in a statistical tie, and in New Hampshire, where Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte is up slightly.

"The GOP is blessed with excellent candidates who are mounting strong campaigns and running ahead" of Donald Trump, Rove said.

"If they keep this up, Republicans may well hold the Senate — though it will probably come down to a few thousand votes, in a handful of states, and decided very late on election night."
