Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel boasted about the GOP's record-setting 2017 fundraising haul Thursday morning, saying it is giving the party resources and momentum to spread out across the country and campaign for the 2018 midterms.

"We just announced today, we raised $132 million in 2017. It is the most any party has ever raised in an off-year, getting ready for a midterm election," McDaniel told CNN. "That's obviously going to give us a lot of resources to go across the country into these battleground states and prepare us for the midterms. We're already in 22 states, building out our data and our ground game."

McDaniel said the GOP is investing heavily in data as it tries to customize its message for each voter. The party of the president generally loses around 30 seats in the first midterm under a president, so McDaniel is realistic in her expectations.

She noted, however, that economic gains under President Donald Trump could boost the party's standing come November.

"We knew there were gonna be headwinds coming our way," she said. "What's happened in the past few months, seeing our economy humming, seeing the tax reform passing, these bonus checks being passed out, those are things that are gonna help us win because we're gonna have an accomplishment column that's fairly large to share with our voters and show that we're doing things that are making our country better."

The New York Times reported last week that the Republican Party had almost $40 million in its bank account, compared to the Democratic National Committee's $6.3 million.

McDaniel spoke with Fox Business Network Wednesday night, meanwhile, and addressed comments made by Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., that were critical of Trump. Flake, who is not running for re-election this year, compared Trump's attacks on the media to former Russian leader Josef Stalin.

"The media is thriving, it's alive and well in this country. This president supports free speech even when it's a media that covers him negatively 90 percent of the time," McDaniel said. "He has every right to push back, and comparing him to a dictator was just a step too far."

McDaniel made her feelings known about Flake's remarks in a Wednesday morning tweet:
