Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Thursday that the panel in charge of organizing and hosting presidential debates is a "total joke."

McDaniel appeared on the Fox News program "America's Newsroom" to speak about next week's debate that was scheduled between President Donald Trump and Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden. Thursday morning, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that the Oct. 15 showdown between the two candidates would be held virtually because of Trump's coronavirus infection.

Trump's campaign later said the president would not participate in the debate because of its remote format.

"This is not a nonpartisan commission. It is filled with Republicans who have been very critical of this president and a large group of Democrats," McDaniel said. "They have hurt this election by holding debates after voting started, which the campaign asked them to move these debates earlier so that voters could get a chance to see these candidates. And now, they're not following the science.

"They're saying we're gonna go virtual. Biden didn't ask for that. The president didn't ask for that. The science certainly doesn't dictate that. The CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] has said you're not shedding live virus 10 days after diagnosis. So why are they changing the rules?"

She added, "I will just tell you that I hope no future nominees of our party work with this commission. They are a total joke, and they are hurting our democracy, and they are impacting this election."

Host Sandra Smith noted that Trump tested positive "merely days ago," and then asked if anyone knows when he last tested negative for the virus. The White House said Trump tested positive Thursday, after which he spent three days in the hospital before being discharged Monday evening.

"The White House has been transparent, the [White House] doctor has been briefing the American public, and of course the president would understand that," McDaniel said. "But Joe Biden didn't even ask to not have in-person debates. This is the commission unilaterally making a decision.

"If the president tests negative, which he should, based on the science, this should be an in-person debate."
