Hours after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott set May 1 as the date for the vote to pick a successor to the late Republican Rep. Ron Wright in Texas’ 6th District, signs indicated that Republicans were uniting behind Wright’s widow, Susan.

A solid conservative who ran the district offices for two state representatives, Susan is also a member of the Executive Committee of the state Republican Party.

She and her husband, who died last month of COVID-19, were considered a formidable political team not unlike Bill and Hillary Clinton.

A sign that Susan Wright would carry the GOP banner was the way other Republicans were bowing out of the race. On Tuesday, Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn removed himself from consideration.

Although the 6th District has been firmly in Republican hands for nearly 49 years, Democrats waged strong campaigns against Wright and held him to 54% of the vote in 2018 and 2010.

Jana Lynn Sanchez, political organizer and 2018 Democratic nominee,  has announced for the open seat. Attorney and 2020 nominee Stephen Daniel has said he will not be a candidate.

Under Lone Star State election law, all candidates will compete on the same ballot May 1 and if no one wins a majority, the two top vote-getters, regardless of party, will meet in a subsequent runoff.
