Sen. Ron Johnson: Trump Wall Really a 'Metaphor' for Border Security

For more than a year, Donald Trump has touted plans to build a "big, beautiful" 10-foot-high wall at the U.S.-Mexico border — but Sen. Ron Johnson now says a physical barrier is more of a symbol for beefing up the nation's security than real.

"I've always thought the wall was a metaphor for securing the border," the Wisconsin Republican, who chairs the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs — Chairman said Thursday on CNN's "New Day."

"And I think it is incredibly important … we have an administration that is committing themselves to securing the border, whatever shape or form that takes."

"We're going to do this in a very thoughtful manner ... Building barriers where we need to."

Johnson's explanation comes a day after Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly revealed a full, east-to-west border will ever be built.

"It is unlikely that we will build a wall from sea to shining sea," Kelly said during a hearing before the Homeland Security Committee.

After Johnson's remarks, "New Day" anchor Chris Cuomo noted he had never heard Trump, elected the nation's 45th commander in chief last November, speak of the wall as a "metaphor."
