Ron Johnson: Like Obamacare, No Guarantees in GOP Health Bill

(MSNBC's "Morning Joe")

There are no guarantees in the Republican healthcare bill that's currently being circulated, just as there aren't any under Obamacare, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Thursday.

Johnson appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and defended the Graham-Cassidy health bill that likely will be voted on in the Senate next week. He was asked several times in testy back-and-forths about whether people who are covered under Obamacare would lose their health coverage under the GOP's plan.

"I will say not if governors manage their programs properly," Johnson said of the bill, which would block grant money to states for building their own healthcare platforms.

He was asked several more times if people would lose coverage.

"I can't guarantee that," Johnson said.

When asked to clarify what he meant, Johnson then said, "Under Obamacare, premiums have already doubled. Supposedly guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions under Obamacare, it's not an absolute guarantee."

Johnson was again asked to clarify his answer, to which he replied, "Listen, millions of people lost coverage under Obamacare. There are no guarantees other than the fact that premiums already have doubled, they'll continue to skyrocket. We're gonna have to continue to throw money at a failing program. It simply doesn't work."

Co-host Mike Barnicle then tried to coax an answer out of Johnson.

"Somewhere in Wisconsin there's a family with a 9- or 10-year-old child with cystic fibrosis currently covered under what you call the disaster of Obamacare," Barnicle said. "Can you tell that family that their premiums under your proposed bill you're about to vote on, their premiums will not go up?"

Johnson replied: "They certainly shouldn't go up. They should be going down. Obamacare artificially doubled premiums nationally."

"There are ways of dealing with this, covering people with pre-existing and high-cost conditions without skyrocketing premiums or collapsing insurance markets. Obamacare is a failed model, it's a faulty architecture. This will put us on a path to start fixing it."
