Sen. Ron Johnson: I'm Backing Trump's Goals, Not Adding Endorsement

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson said Friday he'll back Donald Trump as the GOP presidential nominee, as he agrees with many of the goals Trump espouses, but he was careful to say he doesn't endorse Trump himself.

"We need to grow our economy, to allowing it to realize its full potential," Johnson told CNN's "New Day" co-host Alisyn Camerota, noting that he agrees with Trump that the lack of security at the U.S.-Mexico border is an "enormous problem."

"I will be concentrating on the areas of agreement to build our economy, to build our military, to defeat ISIS, secure our borders," said Johnson. "If we do that, concentrate on those areas of agreement that unify as as a party we'll be in pretty good shape in November . . . I will do everything I can to support achieving those goals."

And when Camerota asked him again why he would not just endorse Trump, Johnson repeated that he was going to "support those goals."

He repeated his stance later in the morning to Fox News' Bill Hemmer on the "America's Newsroom" program, saying that "no two people agree on everything 100 percent. So you look at those big issues, and on those big issues we are in agreement."

Johnson also told Camerota that he is satisfied that Trump has or will distribute the money he says he raised for veterans after sitting out a debate earlier this year.

"He donated to the cause and that's pretty good," said Johnson. "Maybe he didn't make the $6 million. I've been involved in charity and sometimes it's difficult to collect pledges. It's a wonderful intention. If he doesn't get the full $6 million, even $1 million is pretty generous and helpful."

Johnson, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee, has planned a meeting next week on the continuing problems with the Veterans Administration, focusing on a hospital in his home state that has come under fire for distributing too many narcotic painkillers.

He continued that the VA healthcare system is a "single payer government-run bureaucratic" program, and he'd suggest allowing veterans to have more choice and allow them access to private healthcare.
