Expanding on a column he wrote for The Atlantic on Monday, journalist Ron Fournier told CNN on Tuesday that while Democrat Hillary Clinton would make a terrible president, Republican Donald Trump is completely "unthinkable."

In his Atlantic column, Fournier wrote there is "no equivalence" between the two.

"On one hand, Benghazi and email and lies," he wrote of Clinton.

"On the other hand, mendacity, bigotry, bullyism, narcissism, sexism, selfishness, sociopathology, and a lack of understanding or interest in public policy — all to extremes unseen in modern presidential politics," he said of Trump.

In an appearance Tuesday on CNN"s "The Lead with Jake Tapper," Fournier said, "I just concluded for myself that her enormous lack of credibility is outweighed by his lack of temperament."

Fournier is leaving Washington to move to his home state of Michigan, where he'll cast his vote in the general election. He poo-pooed the idea that a vote for a third-party candidate is a wasted vote, but admitted that since Michigan could be a battleground state this year, he will have to carefully consider whether a third-party vote in his case might end up helping Trump – something he said he does not want to do.

"I can't see him being president of this country," Fournier said.

Still, he said, if Clinton's campaign is any indication of what her presidency would be like it will be "secretive" and have a lack of transparency.

"The problem with the Clintons, they're so committed to their righteousness, they don't think the rules apply to them," said Fournier, who has covered Bill and Hillary Clinton since their days in the Arkansas governor's mansion.

Her low trust numbers among voters has been earned, he said, in her handling of the Benghazi aftermath. Thirty emails related to Benghazi that had not been turned over to the State Department were found by the FBI in its probe of Clinton's private email server.

"It's a choice between two very bad candidates," Fournier said. "He would punish enemies. It would be lacking of any understanding of policy or interest in policy."

"It sounds like you're saying she is horrible, but he is unthinkable," Tapper said.

"He is unthinkable," Fournier agreed.
