DeSantis: Nothing 'Magically Changed' to Get Immigration Bill Passed

An upcoming vote on immigration legislation won't likely pass Tuesday, as nothing has "magically changed," Rep. Ron DeSantis said Monday.

"I don't think this has the vote at all," the Florida Republican told Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria."

"It didn't have the votes last week and I don't think there has been anything magically changed to give us the votes now."

Last week's bill got 193 votes last week, and it would actually have really solved many immigration problems, including the separation of immigrant children from their families.

The bill included funding for a border wall, said DeSantis, but also included e-verify and ended the visa lottery and dealt with the asylum issue that "is definitely being abused."

"That could have passed had there been a concerted effort to do so," said DeSantis.

The lawmaker, who President Donald Trump is backing in Florida's governor's race, said that if the new bill passes Tuesday, it will hurt Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.

"I think our voter base will say that's not what we campaigned on, and then I think next summer [Trump] will see another border surge," said DeSantis. "I support the wall but it's not going to be built by next year. It's going to take years and years. Every liberal group will file suits to stop it."

DeSantis on Monday also defended Trump's call to do away with trials and legal proceedings for people crossing the border.

"Right now if you're coming from Mexico and you just hopped the border illegally, you are identified, stopped and immediately turned back," said DeSantis. "You don't get a trial, any of that. It's these people who are not from Mexico coming from Central America that are [tried]."
