DeSantis Slams GOP Rival Putnam: 'Career Politician' Who Does Donors' Bidding

By    |   Friday, 29 June 2018 08:52 AM

Rep. Ron DeSantis, who is campaigning for governor of Florida, Friday morning lambasted GOP competitor Adam Putnam, the state's Commissioner of Agriculture since 2010, as a career politician who did little while serving in his own 10-year term in the House of Representatives.

"Look, he was in Congress for 10 years. I've been there for five,' the Florida Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade. "I've done more in five years than he did in 10. I'm actually leading on issues that matter. What he does is he gets a six-figure salary from the taxpayers of Florida and he campaigns incessantly. He doesn't do his job."

His comments came after he and Putnam faced each other during a Fox News debate in Florida. DeSantis flew to Florida after he and other members of Congress grilled Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Thursday.

On Friday, DeSantis also accused Putnam of covering up "snafus with the background check system" and noted that "he's got problems with sexual harassment in his office."

During a one-year period starting in 2015, three staffers in Putnam's office had admitted to state investigators' findings of sexual harassment and that they were watching pornography on a work computer, reports Politico.

"i'm proud to be doing my job," said DeSantis, responding to a Putnam comment during the debate that he spends too much time in Washington D.C. "I'm working. I'm earning my paycheck, so this notion that somehow you're out there doing your job and that's a bad thing, the only person who would say that is a career politician. Adam Putnam has been in elected office since he was 22 years old and he always does the bidding of his donors instead of the people of Florida and I was able to expose that last night."

Putnam is leading DeSantis in the polls by 32 percent to 17 percent, Kilmeade said. DeSantis, however, said much has changed since the polls were released, including the fact that out that he has since been endorsed by President Donald Trump.

"Those polls are obsolete, Brian," said DeSantis. "They were before the Trump endorsement, before the debate, before our ad campaigns started, so I think that will be the high watermark for him."
