Sen. Wicker: GOP Senators Hammering Out 'Delicate' AHCA Details

Sen. Roger Wicker Tuesday defended Republicans meeting in secret to hammer out details of their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, saying that former President Barack Obama himself had warned Democrats not to be involved.

"I have not seen a final proposal," the Mississippi Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

"I think I see the direction it's going in, and let me say this: There is going to be a full discussion, and there's going to be a score available to the American people before we ask the final version to be voted on"

Wicker, however, did speak of one of the aspects of the deal, in which there will be "50 experiments made in Medicaid," so the program will preserve a system "meant to protect poor children and disabled people."

"We want to move away from the all-encompassing single-payer act Obama was moving then, and try 50 experiments to make Medicaid better, and to give counties choices again and then make good on the promises that the Obamacare advocates were not able to do," said Wicker.

"We want you to choose your own doctor and have choices, and we certainly want to address this situation where the premiums have been skyrocketing.

"I mean, just almost every promise the president solemnly made in a joint speech to Congress has either been violated, and he was not able to fulfill those promises."

Wicker said he's confused though, about the outcry from Democrats who want more access to the secret meetings.

"[Senate Minority Chuck] Schumer said we'll have no part of these discussions," said Wicker. "Famously, President Obama on the way out of office said 'don't participate in this. Let the Republicans own it all. And don't be part of something that dismantles Obamacare.'"

Wicker, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, also discussed the shooting down of a Syrian jet by American troops, and the subsequent threat from Russia to shoot at U.S. planes.

"It is a very serious situation, no question about it," said Wicker. "I've had a chance to ask the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff about this, and he expressed concern about going to war with Russia over the Syrian question. So it's clearly something that needs to be handled delicately."

Wicker noted he agrees with Sen. John McCain, who has called for safe zones where innocent Syrian civilians can be free from barrel bomb attacks.

"It's not a terrible reach with the court of international opinion, to negotiate something that protects people not only from chemical weapons as we've now done, but also from the barrel bomb," said Wicker.
