Rob Porter's Second Wife: I Am Not Part of a Smear Campaign

("Today")

Jennifer Willoughby, the second wife of former White House staff secretary Rob Porter, Friday denied his claims that she is part of a coordinated campaign to smear his reputation with allegations of spousal abuse.

"There was no coordination of this," Willoughby told NBC's "Today" show. "This is unexpected that would have to be speaking about this. Mentioning his name and describing the details of my marriage is nothing that I wanted, and I have only recently been in contact with Colbie [Holderness] to discuss it at all."

Porter submitted his resignation Wednesday after Willoughby and Holderness, his first wife, told the Daily Mail that he had subjected them to physical, verbal, and emotional abuse during their marriages.

The revelations have rocked the White House, forcing questions about whether chief of staff John Kelly knew about the allegations. Further, Porter is reportedly involved in a romantic relationship with White House communications director Hope Hicks.

Willoughby told the "Today" show Friday that she filed a temporary protective order against Porter after he punched in a door at their home while they were separated, because she "really didn't know what else he was capable of."

She also said Friday that she was part of a background check performed by the FBI for Porter's security clearance, and she was "completely honest" about her experiences with him.

"I was completely honest with my experience of the marriage including telling them instances of abuse or police contact," said Willoughby, adding that Porter was curious about what she was going to say.

"He [Porter] definitely let me know that I was going to be contacted by the FBI once he was tapped for the White House and he was curious what I was going to say," she said. "He really wanted to know, 'what are you going to tell them?' and I told him, 'I'm going to tell them the truth."

Willoughby said in her marriage, the abuse was verbal and emotional. Meanwhile, a photo of Holderness, with a black eye she says she got when Porter hit her, has been circulated.

Despite their history, Willoughby said she never wanted him to lose his White House job, because she thought he was good at it, but "this is a consequence of his actions."
