Rob Porter was having discussions about a White House promotion when he resigned last week as staff secretary following allegations he abused his two former wives, CNN is reporting.

The news network attributed its information to "multiple sources familiar with the matter."

According to CNN, Porter had been lobbying to take on new responsibilities outside the scope of his job, including speech writing and trade policy. In addition, Porter was being looked at for a deputy chief of staff post.

Chief of staff John Kelly was reportedly receptive to the idea of promoting Porter.

Kelly "definitely wanted to expand his role," a source told CNN, and senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump also were involved in the effort to elevate his standing, the news network said.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Tuesday the bureau gave White House officials a partial report on potential problems in Porter's background last March — months earlier than the White House has admittied becoming aware of Porter's past, CNN reported.

"The FBI submitted a partial report on the investigation in question in March and then a completed background investigation in late July," Wray told the Senate Intelligence Committee.

"Soon thereafter, we received requests for follow-up inquiry and we did the follow-up and provided that information in November and then we administratively closed the file in January. And then, earlier this month, we received some additional information and we passed that on as well."

Porter ended up stepping down last week amid the alleged domestic abuse allegations by his two former wives, one of whom was photographed with a black eye.
