RNC's McDaniel: Trust the FBI, But Investigate Missing Texts

Americans should trust the FBI, but the text messages between agent Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page are "very concerning" and should be investigated further, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said Wednesday.

"I do," McDaniel responded, when CNN "New Day" co-host Alisyn Camerota asked her if she thinks the FBI should be trusted.

"I think it's very concerning what's happening for Lisa Page and Peter Strzok," she continued. "The text messages we have seen are concerning. They knew about the outcome of the Hillary Clinton investigation before it was released."

McDaniel said she read through some of the texts Tuesday, "where they said Hillary Clinton had sent an email through her server" to then-President Barack Obama.

"Then they changed the language," she said. "They didn't want to put the president there."

The news about Clinton and Obama sending emails through her private server ended up not being included in former FBI Director's eventual conclusions on Clinton, she continued.

"These are things we should get to the bottom of," McDaniel said. "We know our FBI men and women are serving this country with distinction, but these two individuals need to be investigated. They have gone outside the lane and they have been inappropriate."

McDaniel said she does not believe the actions of Strzok and Page taint the work of the FBI, but they "taint their own work."

"I think we need to get to the bottom of the five months of missing text messages that occurred during a very difficult time, during the transition, during when Susan Rice unmasked the names from the FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] warrants," said McDaniel.

"We need to know what happened during that time."

Also on Wednesday, McDaniel said that she knows it's a "big story" that Trump asked acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe who he voted for in the 2016 election, she thinks he was just making conversation to "get to know him." She also said she doesn't think Trump believes that any FBI agent who voted against him can't do their jobs.

"He is not going around to every single FBI agent and saying 'did you vote for me,'" said McDaniel.

She also told Camerota she thinks former FBI Director James Comey deserved to be fired, especially considering the news coming out about what Strzok and Page had been saying in their text messages.

McDaniel also discussed the ongoing discussion on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, saying the president has been clear that the discussion must also include chain migration, the visa lottery, and border safety.

She also said he put the matter up to Congress, where it should be, and Republicans are willing to work with Democrats, but any DACA legislation must include Trump's demands as well.
