The Republican National Committee on Wednesday slammed news reports that special counsel Robert Mueller was now investigating President Donald Trump for obstruction of justice.

"This unfounded accusation against the president changes nothing," RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel said in a statement. "There's still no evidence of obstruction, and current and former leaders in the intelligence community have repeatedly said there's been no effort to impede the investigation in any way."

The Washington Post cited five unidentified sources saying Mueller had expanded his probe beyond possible Russian involvement in the election to include whether Trump obstructed justice.

FBI Director James Comey claimed Trump asked him to end the agency's inquiry into Michael Flynn, the former national security director, on his alleged Moscow ties in a private meeting in the Oval Office in February.

A spokesman for President Trump's personal attorney Marc Kasowitz ripped the Post's report, saying, "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal."

McDaniel said, "The continued illegal leaks are the only crime here."
