The head of the conservative group American Majority said Tuesday he plans to challenge Reince Priebus if Donald Trump loses the presidential campaign next week and if he seeks a fourth term as chairman of the Republican National Committee.
"The priority between now and Tuesday is making sure that Hillary Clinton doesn't win the White House and that Democrats don't win the Senate," Ned Ryun told Politico. "But after the election, if Trump loses and Priebus runs, I will absolutely run for chairman."
Ryun, 43, is the son of former five-term Republican Rep. Jim Ryun of Kansas, who owns Voter Gravity, a political data and technology firm.
He founded American Majority in 2008. The group, based in Purcellville, Va., trains conservatives to run for office and has been active in the tea party movement.
Ryun's allies are quietly seeking support for a possible challenge to Priebus from donors and members of the 168 members of the RNC's national steering committee, Politico reported.
Their argument is, should Trump lose, Priebus would the first chairman in the RNC's history to preside over and lose two presidential elections, according to the sources.
Priebus, 44, was first elected to a two-year term as chairman in 2011. He has won two more terms.
A former chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party, Priebus is close to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
"With my background in grass roots, in data and technology, and not being an unknown quantity among mega-donors, I think I have a lot to offer for the future direction of the RNC and the GOP," Ryun told Politico.
"I am fully aware that the RNC chairman's race is an insider's game," he added. "But I would hope that the committee members would be willing to listen to an outsider's appeal and vision."
Priebus declined to comment to Politico about a possible challenge from Ryun.
