President Donald Trump might be acting as his agenda's own worst enemy in the White House, but staying "on message" during his European trip might show he can make his presidency "great," former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., said Sunday.
"The fact is that administration should be doing so well, and could be doing so well, if they just focused on getting their agenda passed," Santorum told host Dana Bash on CNN's "State of the Union."
"The last nine days hopefully have shown the president that if you stay on message, you stick to the script, you focus on policy, you drive home the messages you talked about during the campaign, and that people in America are excited about – you can be a great president.
Santorum added Trump's tweeting and other actions against the "fake news media" are getting in the way of political progress.
"If you tweet every day and complain about the media and complain about how you're being treated, you're going to be sidetracked and you're not get your deals done," Santorum said.
