Donald Trump will not rest until problems with the Veterans Administration are solved, as President Barack Obama does not "really" care about the nation's veterans, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Trump rival-turned-supporter said Wednesday.
"The Democrats own this VA scandal," Perry, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom"
program. "The president had the opportunity to deal with it back a couple years ago. The bureaucrats know the president of the United States really does not care about this issue. He was concerned about it from a political standpoint. Then he forgot."
But Trump will not forget, Perry said.
"He will wake up every day in the Oval Office talking to his chief of staff and the secretary of the VA wanting to know, 'have you cured the problems in the Veterans Administration?'" Perry said.
"'Are the men and women getting the care they earned?' I promise Donald Trump won't go to bed at night until those issues are addressed."
Earlier this week, Trump outlined in a speech his 10-point plan to solve the VA's issues, including promising to have a hotline in the White House for people to report issues, and if the problems aren't solved, he'll work on them himself, reports RealClearPolitics
Meanwhile, Trump has been able to break through the headlines from the Democratic National Convention all week, and that's because he's a "different cat," Perry said.
"He deals with this differently," he continued. "The media covers him differently. Nothing surprises me about his ability to penetrate through no matter what the story may be. Donald Trump can get in the story. A lot of times he can drive the story, which is to his credit. I don't think there has been anybody as capable of being able to drive the media narrative like Donald Trump certainly in my lifetime. "
And if elected, Trump will surround himself with people who have the expertise to take care of the VA.
"President Obama has shown that he doesn't care about it," Perry said. "And Hillary Clinton showed me didn't care about those men and women in Benghazi.
Trump is also well received by veterans and law enforcement officials, said Perry, because he has a "real empathy with these men and women who wear the uniform."
