Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby said he wouldn't stay on as attorney general if he were in Jeff Sessions' shoes, saying, "I wouldn't be anybody's whipping boy."

Shelby made the comments Wednesday on Fox Business' "Cavuto: Coast to Coast" afternoon program in the aftermath of President Donald Trump publicly reprimanding Sessions — again — earlier in the day.

"I wouldn't be anybody's whipping boy," Shelby told Fox Business host Neil Cavuto.

"I wouldn't be belittled because the president is saying you don't have any confidence in me. That is Jeff's challenge right now, what he wants to do and how he does it. He's a good man. He's going through a lot. He's got a lot of challenges," Shelby said.

Trump took after Sessions on Wednesday over the AG's "disgraceful" decision to assign investigating the FBI's use of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants to the Justice Department Inspector General.

Shelby, R-Alabama, said loyalty and trust have to work both ways.

"Loyalty's a double-edge sword. If the president's loyal to him and vice-versa, then you generally have a smooth relationship. But you got a troubled relationship there and have had for a long time," Shelby said.
