Raids Monday on the offices and hotel room of President Donald Trump's attorney, Michael Cohen, were "seismic," according to Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

"It's a little bit like a nuclear strike with multiple warheads," the Connecticut Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Tuesday.

"[Cohen] knows all the secrets about Donald Trump, and if he were to cooperate it would be indeed a transformative event, so the raid is seismic."

Monday afternoon, the FBI seized documents from Cohen's office and hotel room in New York, including documents that had been related to a $130,000 payment made to adult actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election in exchange for her silence about a sexual encounter she says occurred with Trump.

The warrant to search Cohen's locations was obtained after Special Counsel Robert Mueller sent a referral to officials in New York, including Geoffrey Burman, the interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, which includes Manhattan.

The warrants for the Cohen raids had to go through multiple levels of review, conducted by Trump appointees, Blumenthal pointed out, including Berman, the acting attorney general for his criminal division, assistant U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

"A raid on a lawyer's office is an extraordinary event," Blumenthal said. "For a prosecutor, as I was...this just a remarkable act of audacity, particularly when the lawyer is the sitting president's lawyer. He has the vault, he has the keys to the kingdom."

It is important to remember that when such searches are conducted, "there has to be more than just probably cause," said Blumenthal.

"The FBI and the U.S. attorney has to convince the department of justice that they are going to come away with very significant evidence of a crime. They have to be convinced a crime has been committed."

Blumenthal said he also thinks the raids may have been related to the Russia investigation, with Mueller then referring the information he had to Berman, but more likely they were related to some sort of bank fraud.

"I think Cohen has been involved in Trump's relationship to Russia, his negotiations for the hotel that he wanted to build there, the dealings with Ukrainians have been within Cohen's purview," the senator said,

"But my hunch is that it relates much more to obstruction of justice, perhaps wire fraud, or bank fraud, or money laundering. All of those potential crimes involve Donald Trump."
