State Department staffers are concerned Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's recent push for transparency is more about Hillary Clinton than the current administration, Politico reports.

Tillerson has directed several hundred employees of the department to sort through a backlog of requests for records, in what he claims is a bid for increased transparency, in a move that has won praise from conservative groups.

"We haven't understood why there's been a slow-walking of releasing records, and we've been quite public in counseling the administration to take an approach of extreme transparency," Tom Fitton, president of conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, told Politico. "It looks like someone's listening."

However, many workers believe the actual reason is to reveal Clinton's official emails from her time leading the department. These workers also believe the assignment is meant to push them toward resignation, since many were reassigned from more significant posts.

"It's a remarkable misuse of resources to advance what is at its core a partisan political aim," an unnamed State employee said. "We all know what's going on. And, of course, we're all unhappy that we're being made a part of it."

CNN reported last month President Donald Trump was pushing the State Department to move faster in releasing Clinton's emails, and he "asked Tillerson to work to clear the backlog."
