The conservative magazine that started the in-party rejection of then-candidate Donald Trump, now has its senior editor, National Review's Ramesh Ponnuru, calling for his removal over impeachment.
"The Constitution provides for impeachment and removal to protect us from officials, including presidents, who are unable or unwilling to distinguish between the common good that government is supposed to serve and their own narrow interests," Ponnuru concluded in his missive.
"Though he has done some good things in office, Trump is just such a president. Congress should act accordingly."
Ponnuru's argument was based on answering four criteria in the affirmative, including:
- Are the facts true?
- Does it show abuse of power?
- Does it rise to the level of impeachment?
- Does it do "more good than evil?"
"If the advocates can scale all four walls, then a majority of the House and a supermajority of the Senate ought to remove the president," he wrote. "If any of the obstacles proves insurmountable, the president should be allowed to serve out his term in office. In the current controversy over President Trump’s conduct toward Ukraine, it just so happens that each successive wall is higher than the previous one."
