Moderate Republican senators are readying to use the "nuclear option" in order to get Judge Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, according to CNN.

"If it's necessary to get him confirmed, I may have to vote that way, but I certainly don't want to," said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, adding that both Democrats and Republicans would "rue the day" that the nuclear option would be used.

The nuclear option is a change in Senate rules about breaking a filibuster on a Supreme Court nominee. The current rule requires 60 votes, but the nuclear option changes that to a simple majority of 51, meaning the majority party could approve a candidate on a simple party line vote.

Collins noted that the rule change would make it easier for future presidents to install court justices that match their party affiliation. "It gets bad for the Senate as an institution, and I think it is bad for the court, as well," Collins said.

Republicans have a 52-48 majority in the Senate. 51 votes would allow the change, but not all Republicans have said they are on board with it.

Some GOP members have withheld directly answering whether they support the rule change.

"I'm not being coy at all… I will vote to confirm Judge Gorsuch one way or another," said Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.

"The Senate will confirm Judge Gorsuch despite the filibuster," Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., told CNN.

On Monday, CNN reported that Democrats did not seem concerned about the possible rule change.

"If you don't filibuster Gorsuch, (Sen. Mitch) McConnell will just get rid of it next time," said Adam Jentleson, a former aide to Harry Reid.

Sen. Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat said: "I'm not saying that I'm insisting that we force the Republican majority to break the rules. That's a choice they're going to have to make."
