Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., said Thursday the relationship between congressional Republicans and the White House is on uncertain ground.

"Today [trust] may be a little shaky," he told The Hill, noting before Trump agreed to the Democratic proposal to raise the debt ceiling, "what Trump said, it was solid at least within the conservatives of the Republicans party."

Duncan, a co-founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said, "with the Republicans controlling the House, the Senate and the White House, the deal ought to be struck with [House Speaker] Paul Ryan [R-Wis.] and [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell [R-Ky.] not [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi [D-Calif.] and [Senate Minority Leader Charles] Schumer [D-N.Y.]."

CNN reported Trump "blindsided" GOP leaders when he made the deal over the objections of McConnell, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

"Yesterday we saw Washington's swamp continue to rise: Chuck Schumer wrote the art of the steal by taking hurricane relief hostage to guarantee a December showdown that favors Democratic spending priorities," Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said in a statement, according to The Washington Post.

"Democrats got exactly what they wanted," House Freedom Caucus leader Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said Wednesday, according to Bloomberg.

He added the agreement "gives them the greatest leverage in the world to get exactly what they want later."
