Republican Rep. Greg Walden said he wants coverage of preexisting conditions to remain in force in health insurance.

"I don’t want to go back to the days when you can be denied insurance based on a preexisting condition. I will make sure that people with preexisting conditions can continue to get access to health insurance,” Walden said at an "Examining Opioids" event hosted by the Washington Examiner.

Coverage for those with preexisting conditions is a point of issue in efforts to repeal Obamacare.

The repeal bill that passed the House of Representatives in May 2017 left in the requirement to cover those with such conditions, but included a waiver for states that would allow insurers to charge higher premiums based on the health history of the buyer, the Examiner noted.

Law and insurance experts have said that legal protections for those with preexisting medical conditions who have employer coverage could be in jeopardy, due to Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision not to defend key parts of the law in a lawsuit brought by 20 states.
