Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is putting the Republican majority at risk in 2018, warn Senate GOP aides.

Currently, Republicans hold 248 seats in the House and 54 seats in the Senate.

"If anyone misunderstands what Steve Bannon's goal is, they have to open their eyes," one Senate Republican aide told The Hill. "He doesn't care if we win or lose the Senate. He doesn't care about the consequences for the president.

"Mr. Bannon, it seems clear, does not care about Republicans maintaining their majority in either chamber. He's putting his former boss' agenda on the line in his quest of take over and destroy the Republican Party," the person added.

Bannon plans to back as many as 15 Republican Senate candidates in 2018 and has put a bulls-eye on almost every Republican senator who runs for reelection in an effort to disrupt what he refers to as "the establishment."

"Mitch McConnell and this permanent political class is the most corrupt and incompetent group of individuals in this country," Bannon told a crowd in Alabama in late September. "They think you're a pack of morons. They think you're nothing but rubes. They have no interest at all in what you have to say, what you have to think, or what you want to do."

"Every dollar the [National Republican Senatorial Committee] puts into protecting Republican incumbents is one less dollar than can be used to challenge Democrats," another aide told The Hill.
