A luxury resort hosting the New Mexico Republican Party's state convention has banned reporters from covering the event this weekend.

The Native American tribe of Sandia Pueblo, which operates the Sandia Resort and Casino on its 39 square-mile reservation, told GOP officials it will not allow news media to attend, the Albuquerque Journal reports.

The tribe has refused to discuss the reason for the ban, which apparently caught Republicans by surprise.

State GOP spokesman Tucker Keene told The Journal the ban wasn't mentioned in the rental contract and it's likely that future events future events will be held elsewhere.

"This took months and months to plan, and four days is simply not enough time (to make a change)," Keene told the newspaper.

But Martin Salazar, president of the New Mexico Press Association, told The Washington Times the ban seems too convenient in the wake of the GOP's leadership turmoil.

"I can't imagine that the casino would not allow journalists on the property if the Republican Party were to sanction it," he told The Times.

The sprawling resort features 228 guest rooms, 2,300 slot machines, 52 gaming tables and a golf course.
