Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., received support Friday from an unexpected source – Rep. Jeb Hensarling, a conservative Texas Republican, The Hill reported Friday.

Hensarling chairs the House Financial Services Committee, and often finds himself at odds with Waters, who serves as ranking member on the same committee. What brought the two together Friday was an issue they could both agree on – that threats of violence were wrong.

"A free and democratic society cannot long remain so without a free exchange of political ideas," Hensarling said, according to the Hill. "I disagree with almost everything Congresswoman Waters says, but she deserves the opportunity to be heard in safety and security."

In this case, Waters told CNN the day before that she felt compelled to cancel two scheduled appearances because of a "very serious death threat" made by someone from Hensarling's state. The chairman didn't take it lightly.

"This is just one in several very serious threats the United States Capitol Police are investigating in which individuals threatened to shoot, lynch, or cause me serious bodily harm," Waters told CNN.

The California Democrat has received intense backlash after she urged a group of Los Angeles supporters to harass anyone associated with the Trump administration.

Her remarks came on the heels of an incident where White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her family were told to leave a Virginia restaurant because of her association with the administration.

In response to Waters' remarks about harassing administration officials, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., presented a House resolution calling upon the California Democrat to resign.

"Rep. Waters' comments could directly and unnecessarily lead to public unrest, physical violence, and physical injury," the resolution stated.
