Reince Priebus Slaps GOP: Stop the Gutter Talk

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus has cautioned his party to avoid "name-calling and getting things in the gutter" following former House Speaker John Boehner's explosive comments about Ted Cruz.

"I happen to believe that God gave us a voice to honor each other, honor ourselves and honor God," Priebus said Friday in an interview with Fox News.

"So I've been saying for months that people ought to remember that before they start making comments that are out of line and just watch what you say and remember that we are here to honor each other and ourselves."

"So this is about our country. It's about the place that we love. It's not about the individual or the party, it's about our future."

On Thursday, Boehner, who's had a long running feud with Cruz, went ballistic when asked about him during a chat with government and history students at Stanford University.

"[Cruz is] Lucifer in the flesh," Boehner declared, according to The Stanford Daily newspaper. "I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a b**** in my life."

Cruz responded that Boehner had "allowed his inner Trump to come out" and "when he says I'm the biggest SOB he's ever worked with, he's never worked with me."

"Yes, there is drama but there's a lot of enthusiasm," Priebus told Fox News' Jon Scott.

"I'm talking about just name-calling and getting things in the gutter. That's what I'm talking about. Just honoring each other, honoring ourselves, honoring God and understanding this is about the future of America and that's what has to come first."

Priebus believes the sniping will soon taper off.

"Things are more divisive obviously within our primary right now then they will be when we have a nominee so some of that stuff is going to smooth out and go away.
