Registered American voters are more concerned about the U.S. economy going into a recession than themselves contracting the coronavirus, according to the latest Fox News poll.

The concern of a U.S. recession trumps personally catching the virus by 12 percentage points, including 23 percentage points among those very concerned.

On the question of being concerned about the U.S. entering an economic recession:

  • 91% concerned.
  • 61% of which are very concerned.
  • Just 8% not concerned.
  • Only 3% not concerned at all.

On the question of personally contracting COVID-19:

  • 79% concerned.
  • Just 39% of which very concerned.
  • 24% not concerned.
  • Only 6% not concerned at all.

Just 21% say they know someone who has contracted COVID-19, up from 12% two weeks ago. That figure is likely regional, though, as coronavirus hotspots are far more likely to have people who know of someone infected. Also, with social distancing policies in place across the country, many have not interacted with infected individuals.,

Interestingly, the poll also found voters are now more optimistic on the economy improving than they were two weeks ago, the early part of the first 15 days to slow the spread:

  • 44% think economy will get better (up 7 points from 37%).
  • 35% think it will get worse (down 5 points from 40%).

Just 30% of voters polled believe the U.S. is still headed in the wrong direction in the fight against the global coronavirus pandemic, which pales in comparison to the 57% feeling like the U.S. is now headed in the right direction. There is a lag expected by voters, though, as just 14% believe the worst is over, while 75% think the worst is still to come.

The new 30 days to slow the spread does not expire until later this month.

The Fox News poll surveyed 1,107 registered American voters between April 4-7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
