The Trump administration's threat to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities is an attempt to "intimidate us into being what I've called 'fugitive slave catchers,'" Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said Sunday, the Hill reports.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week said he would cut off U.S. Justice Department grants to cities that fail to assist federal immigration authorities.

His statement was aimed at dozens of cities and other local governments, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, that have joined a growing "sanctuary" movement aimed at shielding illegal immigrants from stepped-up deportation efforts. Police agencies in those jurisdictions have barred their officers from routinely checking on immigration status when making arrests or traffic stops.

Baraka, a Democrat, made his comments during an appearance on "PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton" on MSNBC.

He called the immigration crackdown “a very unconstitutional, un-American policy” and said sanctuary cities that refuse to assist the federal government “makes it difficult for them to continue their policy because they don’t have the resources to run down all the undocumented residents locally.”
